Hair Transplant Aftercare in Turkey: Rules and Follow-Up

Illustrated hair transplant aftercare stages from day 1 to day 30

Medically reviewed by Dr. Barış Duman

Short answer: The first two weeks after a hair transplant are the most sensitive, because this is when the new grafts need protecting. Scabs usually start to come away around days 8-10, and the wash around day 10 clears most of them. If you travel to Istanbul for your operation, much of this period takes place at home, so your follow-up continues remotely.

The basics of hair transplant aftercare

The first wash is done the day after your operation, or on day 2 depending on the time of your operation, following the protocol set by your doctor. The dressing on the donor area is removed at the same stage.

Days 1-14 are the most delicate period for the grafts. Do not scratch the transplanted area or touch it with unwashed hands, and protect it from knocks, rubbing and pressure.

Scabs clear within about 10-14 days. A controlled wash around day 10 usually removes most of them.

Shock loss: between weeks 3 and 8, some of the transplanted hairs may shed temporarily. This is an expected part of the process. The shed part is usually the hair shaft; the root generally stays alive under the skin and prepares to grow new hair.

New growth starts around months 3-4 and becomes more visible from months 4-5. Hair then thickens and gains density over time. The final result is usually assessed at 12-18 months.

Always follow the aftercare and washing instructions your doctor gives you. They come first if anything here differs from your own plan.

The first 30 days in brief

  • Days 1-3: Mild swelling may reach the forehead and around the eyes. Keep your head from bending forward for the first 3-4 days. Light oozing on the first night and tightness in the donor area can occur. See what to expect in the first 7 days.
  • Days 1-2: The first wash takes place, timed by your operation. Our washing guide explains the steps; your doctor’s timing takes priority.
  • Days 4-7: Scabs, redness, itching and a few hairs in the rinse water may appear.
  • Days 8-14: Scabs clear. The skin may look pink and numbness may continue.
  • Days 15-21: Heavier shedding of transplanted hair may begin. Our shock loss article explains why.
  • Days 22-30: Numbness may start to fade.

The months that follow

New hair appears over several months, and the way it looks can change from one stage to the next. The recovery timeline from day 1 to 12 months goes through this in detail. The crown often takes longer, as it tends to have a lower blood supply.

What patients ask about most

Swelling

It can appear in the first days and eases gradually. Keeping your head from bending forward for the first 3-4 days can help.

Itching and spots

Both can occur while the scalp heals and while new hair comes through. Do not scratch or squeeze; tell your patient manager if it worries you.

Numbness

It can last a while and usually fades over time.

Sleeping position

In the first days, avoid putting pressure on the transplanted area. Read our guide to sleeping after a transplant.

Sport and exercise

Return to heavy exertion gradually and agree the timing with your doctor.

Sun, pools and the sea

Protect the transplanted and donor areas from direct sunlight for the first 14 days. For the first 2 months, avoid sunbathing and any long exposure that could cause sunburn.

Hats and beanies

A hat can be worn after day 10 and a beanie after day 40. Your doctor decides, depending on the structure of the hat, so ask before you wear one. There is more in our article on hats.

Smoking, alcohol and diet

Follow your doctor’s advice on all three.

Medication

Decide on any medication together with your doctor. With your doctor’s approval, finasteride 1 mg can be started 2 months before the operation or 10 days after it.
