Short answer: At Hairpol, the minimum age for a hair transplant is 22, and we prefer patients to be 25 or over. There is no upper age limit.
Age alone is not enough, though. Our doctor decides whether you are suitable after looking at how your hair loss is progressing, the capacity of your donor area and your general health.
You may see different age recommendations from other clinics.
Why is there no single right age?
Two people of the same age can lose hair in very different ways. What matters is how quickly the hair loss is progressing and how much donor hair you may need later. Transplanted hair is intended to be permanent, but the hair around it can continue to fall out. Your plan therefore has to take into account how you will look in years to come, not just today.
What changes with age?
Under 25
At this age it is hard to predict where hair loss will go, so treatment under medical supervision and monitoring with photos may be recommended first. We do not perform transplants on anyone under 22. Between 22 and 25, the hairline is designed more cautiously, with later years in mind. Our article on hair transplants in your 20s covers this in detail.
25 to 35
The pattern of hair loss starts to become clearer for most people, although it still varies from person to person. Your family history of hair loss and how you respond to treatment can play an important part in the decision.
35 to 50
The course of hair loss is often more predictable, which can make planning easier. Any chronic condition or regular medication should be assessed before the operation.
50 and over
Age alone is not a barrier. General health, the quality of the donor area and realistic expectations are what count. Read our article on hair transplants after 50.
Five things that matter more than age
- Speed of hair loss: how far has it progressed in the last year or two?
- Donor area: how many healthy follicles are there at the back of your head? See our article on donor capacity.
- Cause of hair loss: is it genetic, or is there another cause? Read about who is not a candidate for a hair transplant.
- General health: is there a chronic condition that is not under control?
- Expectations: will the hairline you want today still suit your face years from now?
Wait, or go ahead now?
If your hair loss is progressing quickly and the picture is not yet clear, waiting may be wiser. If it has been stable for a long time and your donor area is sufficient, this may be a good time to plan. The Norwood scale can help you understand your hair loss. You can make the decision together with your doctor.
How do we assess this at Hairpol?
We do not look at your age in isolation. We review your photos, your history of hair loss and your donor area together, and if an operation would be too early for you, we say so plainly. When you are suitable, we plan a personal hairline and the medically appropriate maximum number of grafts that can be safely harvested without harming the donor area, with protecting the donor area as the priority. Consultations are available in English, French, Turkish and German, and your photos can be reviewed before you plan any travel.
Frequently asked questions
What is the minimum age for a hair transplant?
At our clinic the minimum age is 22, and we prefer patients to be 25 or over.
Can I have a hair transplant at 20?
Not at our clinic, because our minimum age is 22. At 20, it is usually not yet clear how your hair loss will progress, so a medical assessment and monitoring are the better next step.
Is 23 or 24 too young for a hair transplant?
It can be considered if your hair loss is stable, your donor area is sufficient and the plan is long term. The decision should rest on these criteria and not on your age alone.
Can I have a hair transplant after 50?
Yes. If your general health and donor area are suitable, age alone is not a barrier.
Is there an upper age limit?
No. General health and donor capacity are what decide it. Your doctor makes the decision after examining you.
What is the best age for a hair transplant?
There is no age that applies to everyone. The right time is when your hair loss pattern is clear, your donor area is sufficient and your expectations are realistic.
If I have a transplant young, will I need another one?
If your hair loss progresses, another procedure may come up later. See our second hair transplant page.
