Hair Transplant in Istanbul

Istanbul is where most hair transplant journeys to Turkey actually happen. The city is where the clinics are, where the flights land, and where you will spend the days either side of your procedure. This page is about that practical side: which airport to fly into, how long to book, where it makes sense to stay, what you can realistically do while you are here, and what to ask an Istanbul clinic before you send any money.

Hairpol is based in Ataşehir, on the Asian side of Istanbul. We perform FUE, Sapphire FUE and DHI hair transplantation, along with beard and eyebrow transplantation, hair transplantation for women, afro hair transplantation and non-surgical hair treatments. We consult in English, Turkish and German.

Where the clinic is, and why the address matters

Istanbul is spread across two continents and it is genuinely large. A clinic address is not a detail — it decides how much of your trip you spend in a car.

Ataşehir sits on the Asian side, in a business district rather than a tourist quarter: calmer streets, hotels built for business travellers, ordinary shops and pharmacies within walking distance, and none of the crowding around the historic peninsula. For a few days built around resting and washing your scalp carefully, that is an advantage rather than a compromise.

Two airports, and the difference between them

Istanbul has two international airports. Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) is on the Asian side and the closer of the two to Ataşehir. Istanbul Airport (IST) is on the European side with the wider long-haul network, but reaching the Asian side from it means crossing the city. Neither is wrong: if the better flight lands at Istanbul Airport, take it and allow more time for the transfer.

Traffic is the variable people underestimate

Journey times here vary enormously with the time of day, and the bridges between the two sides are where that shows up most. Two things follow. Do not book a return flight with a tight window on the day of a clinic appointment. And if you have a choice of arrival times, avoid landing in rush hour the day before your procedure — you want to arrive rested.

Istanbul’s clinic density: the advantage and the caveat

Istanbul has one of the highest concentrations of hair transplant clinics anywhere. That has two consequences and you should hold both in mind.

The advantage is real: teams here operate constantly rather than occasionally, technicians are experienced, instruments and aftercare products are readily available, and the whole medical travel process — transfers, interpreting, hotel coordination — is a well-worn path rather than an improvisation.

The caveat is equally real. Demand on this scale attracts a layer of agencies, brokers and package sellers sitting between patients and the people actually performing surgery, and some of the “clinics” that appear in search results are booking businesses that subcontract the procedure elsewhere. Before you commit, establish where your procedure will physically take place, who performs each stage, and whether the person you have been messaging works for the clinic or for an intermediary.

How many days to plan in the city

Most international patients build a short stay around three fixed points: arrival, the procedure, and at least one post-operative check before flying. The number of nights depends on your plan, so confirm it with the clinic before booking flights rather than after. As a shape of the trip:

Day What usually happens What to keep in mind
Arrival Airport transfer, hotel check-in, rest. Pre-operative consultation and blood tests may take place today or the next morning Arrive rested if you can. Follow the preparation instructions you were given, including anything you were told to avoid
Procedure day A full day at the clinic: planning and hairline design, local anaesthesia, extraction and implantation. You return to your accommodation in the evening Wear a button-up or zip-up top. Bring something to occupy yourself. You will be awake and able to talk and eat
Day after Return to the clinic for a dressing check and detailed aftercare instructions, including how to wash Short walks only. No gym, no direct sun on the grafts, nothing pressing on the recipient area
Following days First washes, done under supervision or exactly as instructed. Swelling may appear around the forehead and then settle Keep activity low. Avoid crowded, dusty or very hot places. Sleep with the head elevated
Departure A final check if one is scheduled, then transfer to the airport Choose a seat where nothing rests against your head. A loose head covering only if the clinic has approved it

Build in a buffer. Flights get delayed, plans occasionally shift by a day, and a trip with no slack in it turns a minor change into a real problem.

Choosing where to stay

The instinct is to book near the sights. For this trip, book near the clinic.

  • Proximity beats the view. Short transfers matter most on exactly the days you least want to sit in a car
  • Ask precisely what the clinic arranges. Accommodation and transfers may be included, partly included or entirely your own responsibility, and “arranged” does not always mean “paid for”
  • A quiet room with a good bathroom is worth more than a large hotel — you will be resting, sleeping propped up and washing your scalp slowly
  • Air conditioning is not a luxury in an Istanbul summer. Heavy sweating over fresh grafts is one of the things you are asked to avoid
  • A pharmacy and a supermarket nearby are more useful than nightlife. So is somewhere to buy simple food without a long walk
  • If someone is travelling with you, check the room takes two comfortably — help with washing in the first days is genuinely useful

Getting around while you are here

Istanbul has an extensive metro network, the metrobus, ferries across the Bosphorus and plentiful taxis, and ride-hailing apps work here. Before your procedure, use whatever you like.

Afterwards, be more careful. Crowded transport at peak times means jostling, heat and dust, none of which suits a freshly operated scalp, so short direct transfers are worth the extra cost in the first days. If you take a ferry, remember the top deck means sun and wind on your head.

Sightseeing: what is actually realistic

Many patients hope to combine treatment with a few days of seeing the city, and that is reasonable — but the order matters. Istanbul rewards long days of walking, in strong sun for much of the year, on dusty streets: exactly the conditions you are told to avoid immediately after surgery.

If sightseeing matters to you, do it before your procedure and keep the day before light. Afterwards, plan short, shaded, low-effort outings and nothing more. A hammam, swimming, a long boat trip in full sun and anything that makes you sweat heavily are off the list in the early period. Your clinic will say when each becomes reasonable again.

Timing your trip through the year

Istanbul summers are hot and humid, which makes the sweat-and-sun restrictions harder to live with in the days after surgery. Winters are mild but wet and grey. Spring and autumn are the most comfortable seasons to recover in, and if your calendar allows a choice they make aftercare noticeably easier.

Think about your own calendar too. Regrowth takes months, not weeks, so if there is an event you are planning around, count backwards generously rather than optimistically.

FUE, Sapphire FUE and DHI — what to ask an Istanbul clinic

Every clinic in the city advertises the same set of techniques, which makes the technique name a poor way to choose between them. The useful questions are about how your specific day will run:

  • Who performs the extraction, who opens the channels, and who places the grafts
  • How much of the procedure the surgeon carries out personally
  • How many patients are being treated at the same time on your day
  • Whether the technique proposed for you was chosen after looking at your donor area, or is simply what the clinic promotes
  • Whether the procedure takes place at the clinic itself or at another facility
  • Who you contact once you are home, and in which language

The right technique depends on your donor area, hair characteristics and the area being treated. It is decided after examination, not from a brochure.

Language and staying in touch

Language rarely becomes a problem in Istanbul clinics, but continuity does. Ask whether the person answering your questions before booking is the same one you can reach in month three, when you have a question about shedding and want an answer from someone who knows your case. We consult in English, Turkish and German.

What shapes the price of an Istanbul procedure

Two Istanbul quotes can differ for reasons that have nothing to do with surgical quality — one may include a hotel and transfers while the other prices the procedure alone. Before comparing numbers, compare what sits inside them:

  • The number of grafts your plan requires and how that estimate was reached
  • The technique used and whether techniques are combined
  • The length of the session and whether the case is planned across more than one day
  • Your hair type and donor characteristics, since some extractions are slower and more demanding
  • Whether this is a first procedure or a correction of earlier work
  • Where the procedure takes place and how the team is composed
  • Whether transfers, accommodation and interpreting are inside the quoted package or outside it
  • Medication, post-operative products and the follow-up included

After you fly home

Period What is typical
First week Scabbing around the grafts, tenderness in the donor area, possible forehead swelling that settles. Washing follows the routine you were shown in Istanbul
Weeks 2-8 Transplanted hairs shed. This is expected; the follicle remains in place
Months 3-4 Early regrowth, usually fine and uneven. Too early to judge anything
Months 6-9 Density becomes visible, though texture may still differ from surrounding hair
Months 12-18 The result settles, with the crown typically the slowest area to mature

Follow-up continues remotely by phone or email, with photograph check-ins at agreed points. Timelines vary from person to person and depend on the area treated, your hair characteristics and general health.

Warning signs when booking an Istanbul clinic

  • A graft number quoted before anyone has looked at photographs of your donor area
  • Pressure to pay a deposit today, or a discount that expires within hours
  • Reluctance to name the facility where the surgery takes place
  • All communication running through a salesperson you can never get past
  • Before-and-after images with no information about the patient, the plan or how much time had passed
  • A quote that is a single number with no breakdown and no list of what is excluded
  • Risks and recovery restrictions that are only mentioned when you ask about them
  • No clear answer about who to contact once you are back home

Frequently asked questions

Which Istanbul airport should I fly into?

Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) is on the Asian side and closer to our clinic in Ataşehir, so transfers are usually shorter. Istanbul Airport (IST) is on the European side with a wider long-haul network; it works perfectly well, but allow more time for the crossing.

How many nights should I book in Istanbul?

Enough to cover arrival, the procedure and at least one post-operative check, plus a buffer. The exact number depends on your plan, so confirm it with us before booking flights rather than fitting treatment around tickets you already hold.

Where in Istanbul is your clinic?

Hairpol is in Ataşehir, on the Asian side of Istanbul, a business district rather than a tourist area. It is quieter than the centre, well served by ordinary shops and pharmacies, and closer to Sabiha Gökçen airport.

Can I sightsee after my hair transplant?

Only lightly. Long walks in strong sun, dusty streets, crowded transport and anything that makes you sweat are best avoided early on. If seeing the city matters, plan it before the procedure and keep the days afterwards short and shaded.

Is it safe to travel to Istanbul for a hair transplant?

Istanbul receives medical travellers constantly and the practical side is routine. The variable is the clinic, not the city: check who performs the surgery, where it takes place and what aftercare you receive.

What is the best time of year to come to Istanbul for a hair transplant?

Spring and autumn are the most comfortable, because the sun and sweat restrictions are easier to follow when it is not hot and humid. Summer is workable with air conditioning and sensible planning; winter is mild but wet.

Do I need a visa to come to Turkey for treatment?

Entry requirements depend on your nationality and change from time to time, so check the current rules with the official Turkish authorities or your nearest consulate. We can provide documentation about your appointment if that helps your application.

Will someone meet me at the airport?

Transfer arrangements vary with the plan agreed with you. Ask exactly what is included before you book and get the answer in writing — it is one of the most common points of confusion when comparing Istanbul clinics.

Can I fly home the day after the procedure?

We do not recommend planning it that way. There is normally a check at the clinic the day after, and being shown how to wash your scalp in person removes a lot of uncertainty. Extra room in the schedule also protects you if anything shifts by a day.

Do I need to speak Turkish?

No. We consult in English, Turkish and German, and English is widely understood in central Istanbul and around the airports.

What should I bring with me to Istanbul?

A button-up or zip-up top for the procedure day, a list of your medication, your medical documents, a loose head covering to use only if the clinic approves it, and a neck pillow for a long flight home. Everything else you can buy locally.

Can I bring my partner or family with me?

Yes, and many patients do — having someone with you is genuinely helpful in the first days, particularly for washing. Just be realistic: your own schedule after the procedure will be quiet, so plan their sightseeing independently of yours.
