The statistics are unforgiving, as hair loss can start quite unexpectedly and even at a young age. That is why the popularity of hair transplants is constantly growing. However, before deciding on this procedure, patients wonder where to start and what need to know about hair transplant.
Indications and contraindications for hair transplant surgery
The indication for a transplant is diagnosed baldness. Therefore, it is very important to consult a doctor who will determine the cause and degree of baldness. Hair transplant is done only for adults; there is no upper age limit. But the presence of contraindications and a sufficient amount of donor material should be taken into account.
Hair transplant methods
Modern medicine offers effective and painless hair transplant methods. Among them, the FUE method, the DHI method, the Choi method and some others are considered the main ones. In addition, non-surgical techniques also exist for the treatment of hair loss (such as mesotherapy or laser treatment). The method of hair loss treatment or hair transplantation is selected by the doctor at the consultation individually for each patient.
Hair transplant procedure
There are three main stages of the hair transplant procedure.
- Preparation. This includes the initial consultation with a doctor and determining the volume of the transplant. At this stage, the patient takes tests, and the doctor selects the method of surgery.
- Transplantation. Whichever method is chosen, the surgery can take several hours. The patient gets local anesthesia. The donor area is prepared for material extraction. Then the extracted hair follicles are transplanted into the bald areas. Depending on the transplantation method, this can be done in one touch or in two stages (extraction then implantation).
- Postoperative care. As a rule, patients can return to their usual life on the second day after hair transplant, albeit with some restrictions. So, for example, the first two weeks after the surgery, the transplanted hair needs special daily care. Also, restrictions may affect physical activity and the use of alcohol (during the first-month hair transplant).
